The WISD Special Education Department provides services and programs to the county's 10 school districts, supporting the efforts of local school districts, public school academies and private schools. In collaboration with the county's, families and students, WISD provides leadership, professional development, program options, transitional services, early childhood education, and classroom support.
The Special Education department directly implements services for approximately 265 students with moderate to severe disabilities from birth to 26 years old and court involved youth. Resource information is also available for the Early College Alliance, Education Project for Homeless Youth, and Gifted and Talented services.

Assistive Technology
WISD offers comprehensive assistive technology services to students, parents, local districts, staff, and community agencies. Parent Advisory Committee (PAC)
The PAC is comprised of parents from Local Educational Agencies (LEA) within WISD service area whose children have special needs. The PAC meets monthly, usually on the third Tuesday, September-June, at WISD. Meetings are open to all parents and persons interested in special education.

The public school districts in Washtenaw County, working together with Washtenaw ISD,
envisions a future whereby all children have equal access and educational opportunity to learn
with high expectations, within a meaningful and challenging curriculum, employing a
differentiated instructional approach using multiple assessments to gauge student learning.
Human Services Collaborative Council Resource Guide
The HSCC fulfills a state requirement that each Michigan community have in place a Multi-Purpose Collaborative Body (MPCB). The HSCC evolved from the Washtenaw County Family Services Collaborative Council to provide leadership for policies and funding that affect services for children, families and adults among private and public community institutions.
Transition Planning Information
On behalf of local school districts, WISD operates transitional classes and educational services for post high school student who are unable to graduate from high school due to the severity of their disability. The goal of the service is to help students learn to live, work and participate in recreation in their community with as much independence as possible. To that end, the services and meeting sites are located though out the county to make them as close to the student's homes as possible.
