  • Better Together
Learner-centered secondary school options for all Washtenaw County students

  • Customized
Each student has a personalized plan based on skills and personal goals. Students progress through the curriculum as quickly as they are able, taking additional time as needed. These school sites serve a maximum of 600 students, each. Some are much smaller.

  • Technology Infused
Each student has access to the technology needed to be literate in the systems that will be used upon entrance into college, technical training or work.

  • Skill Based
Each student is assessed on and credit is awarded for mastery of the Michigan Curriculum Standards, not the amount of seat time in a class.

  • Early College Credit
Students can earn post-secondary credit and demonstrate needed 21st century skills to be successful in college and post-secondary training institutions prior to graduating from high school.

  • Collaborative
These options feature a partnership of local school districts with support from WISD, higher education, businesses and other community partners who have a commitment to demonstrating entrepreneurship, innovation and creativity.

  • Choice & Equity
Programs are open to students for all collaborating districts. Enrollment limits are addressed through a lottery that assures representation of the community by ethnicity, race, gender and socio-economic class.

Current Choices
  • Early College Alliance @ EMU
The Early College AllianceSM (ECA) is a unique educational program designed to fully immerse high school-aged students into the post-secondary learning environment. ECA is a public, early/middle college program located on the campus of Eastern Michigan University. It exists in partnership with local school districts (Chelsea, Lincoln, Milan, Whitmore Lake, Willow Run, Ypsilanti) and Washtenaw Intermediate School District.

  • New Tech High @ Ardis
The backbone of Ypsilanti New Tech High School @ Ardis' unique learning environment is Project-Based Learning. Instead of handing out daily assignments, teachers assign long-term, real-world projects with different components. Opened in the fall of 2010, this school will make great strides to connect students with the community through the projects they create.

  • Widening Advancement for Youth — Washtenaw
Opened in the fall of 2010, The Widening Advancement for Youth—Washtenaw Pilot Project is a year-round voluntary educational program for youth who have dropped out of high school, are failing in the traditional high school, or have health problems or behavioral challenges that affect school attendance.

  • Washtenaw International High School
Washtenaw International High School is a free, public, consortium high school for students in participating Washtenaw County school districts. It will open in the Fall of 2011 to its first group of ninth grade students.

The school will provide a challenging, student-centered, inquiry-based sequence of courses with an emphasis on international understanding, cultural identity and the taking of multiple perspectives. It will be a program that emphasizes rigorous academic standards in disciplinary and interdisciplinary knowledge.

The school has been designed to meet all International Baccalaureate requirements for teacher training, course design and assessment frameworks. We will begin the process of authorization for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program in the spring of 2011.
