Native Landscaping Project

Black Eyed Susan

As of the summer of 2000, the WISD has begun the process of creating more native plant greenspace areas on our campus. We have involved our staff, school community, board of education and neighborhood associations. We are proud to be leaders in utilizing our campus as an environmental education opportunity while being responsible stewards of our beautiful space. We owe our thanks to the following WISD Board members whose vision and dedication have allowed us to undertake this project: Anne M. Comeau, Diane Hockett, Gregory A. Peoples, Mary Jane Tramontin and Mark VanBogelen.

Initially the project was inspired by Kay Wozniak, a WISD employee who has since retired. Seeing a sign with a poison symbol from a local company that had just treated their lawn with pesticides she read the warning for children and animals to avoid the area. Wozniak decided that as a school campus we could set a better example for the community and provide a safer school setting for our students. Here Kay is shown standing by our campus project sign.
