State Board Continuing Education Units (SB-CEUs)
State Board Continuing Education Units (SB-CEUs) are State Board approved credit for qualifying in-services, workshops, trainings or conferences, that may be used for renewal of selected certificates issued by the Michigan Department of Education.
Significance of SB-CEUs
For teachers, administrators and education paraprofessionals, a record of SB-CEUs taken is an excellent item to include in a portfolio or as an attachment to a resume. For certificate renewal, teachers, school psychologists, or administrators who hold the following certificates must obtain 18 SB-CEUs, six approved college credits, or a combination of both every five years:
- Professional Education Certificate
- Occupational Education Certificate
- School Psychologist Certificate
Note:
MDE does not issue school administrators a certificate. However, they are required to complete 18 SB-CEUs, six semester hours, or a combination of both every five years for continued employment.
Generic CEUs cannot be used toward renewal of a Michigan Teacher or School Psychologist Certificate. Only state approved SB-CEU training counts toward certificate renewal. Training program and/or conferences sponsored by either an authorized provider of the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) and/or Michigan Virtual University (MVU) may be eligible for SB-CEU via a collaborative agreement between MDE and IACET and MVU, respectively.
If you have questions about your certification and renewal, please contact the Michigan Department of Education’s Office of Professional Preparation Services. Information is available online at http://www.michigan.gov/mde/0,1607,7-140-6530_5683_14795---,00.html.
